Anyone who has read up on garage floor paints will tell you that, if nothing else, one consistency in the directions of all epoxy garage floor coatings is that the floor must be very, very clean. Opinions vary on if existing paint should be stripped down to the concrete or merely cleaned up and free of contaminants, although the safest way would probably be to always strip any existing paint. In this article, we’ll cover how to clean your garage in preparation for an epoxy garage floor coating. Although there is nothing here that will damage your floor in any way, you will want to check the directions for your particular garage floor epoxy kit to be sure that there are no additional steps in order to successfully apply the epoxy garage floor coating.

Do You Have A New Concrete Garage Floor?

There are a few things you should ask yourself before you begin. Is the concrete garage floor new? If so, you will need to wait to do anything at all. New concrete garage floors should be allowed to cure for at least thirty days before any cleaning or applying of epoxy garage floor paint.

What’s The Weather Like, Ollie?

If it’s gonna rain, humidity will increase, and your epoxy garage floor paint is not going to set correctly. Will a light drizzle on the 23rd hour be a horrible thing? Unlikely, yet why take the chance when you can just look at the forecast?

Too Cold Or Too Hot?

Make sure when you are checking the weather that you also take a look at the temperatures. It is not wise to lay down epoxy garage floor paint if the air temperature is above 90, or below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. You can probably skate pretty close to the hot mark since your garage’s floor is obviously shaded (I hope?!), but do not tempt fate with the lower mark. Consider, if it is 55 degrees in the air, it will be much cooler in the concrete. There’s no point in pushing it. By the time everything is said and done, there is just too much hard work at risk. Don’t mess it up before you even begin.

Are You Ready For To Clean?

If any of these problems exist, do not bother cleaning your garage floor. Seriously, it is not worth it, just go find something else to do, because otherwise you will just be cleaning it again once the problem clears up. Between sweating stains, humidity, dust, and whatever might come off your cars, the floor will not be remotely clean within 72 hours of cleaning it. However, if everything looks good, you can move on to cleaning your garage floors.
